The thesis deals with the problem of teaching future navigators how to write business correspondence in English. The methods of teaching writing for communication in a foreign language in general and writing business documentation in English in particular have been analyzed; their advantages, disadvantages and the absence of methods of teaching business correspondence in a foreign language to future navigators have been revealed. In this way the professional and linguistic features of the navigators’ business correspondence in English with the Port authorities of foreign countries have been determined specifying the semantic, stylistic and genre aspects. The semantic structure of the future navigators’ speech behavior has been established on the basis of the research of interrelation of internal subjective-figurative code and external expanded written foreign speech. It consists in the gradual increase of the content of speech activity from conditional-contact to extended-contact, and finally to professional-contact activity within the real navigation practice. The general didactic and methodical principles of organizing the process of teaching future navigators how to write business correspondence in English have been substantiated. These are the following principles: a) education and upbringing interconnection; scientific nature of the material under study; visualization of presentations of the material under study; consistency in speech skills development; accessibility for mastering the educational material under study; profound mastering the educational material, i.e. saving language and speech material in the cadets’ long-term memory; allowance of learning each subsequent part of language and speech material in case the relatively complete mastering of its previous parts has taken place; relevance of the material under study; integrated teaching professional and foreign language speech activity; b) interconnected teaching of different types of speech activity; conscious mastering the linguistic material and developing speech activity skills on its basis; teaching written communication based on reading activity; role-playing activization of professional cadets’ activity. The process of teaching future navigators how to write business correspondence in English, taking into account all its links: teaching stages, teaching aims, elements of the teaching object, components of the teaching content, methods, means and results of teaching has been modelled. The necessity of cadets' language skills accumulation by learning each subsequent dose of the language material in connection with the previously studied ones for gradual stable expansion of the written communication skills has been proven. The system of exercises on teaching future navigators how to write business correspondence in English which consists of four blocks has been elaborated. The first block of exercises is aimed at acquiring the knowledge of vocabulary. The second block is aimed at vocabulary skills development. The third and fourth blocks are aimed at the development of reading and writing skills that gradually become more complicated by their content. The criteria for evaluating the levels of future navigators’ language proficiency and development of skills of business correspondence in English, namely: language criterion, limited-speech criterion, expanded speech criterion and professional speech criterion have been defined. The summarizing professional-speech criterion has had the following indicators: a number of spelling and stylistic mistakes in the letter; a number of lexical items used according to the topical vocabulary under study and to the definite genre; a number of authentic forms of expressing thoughts in writing; tolerance in information presenting; completeness of the presented information to solve emerging problems; appropriateness to the letter genre requirements; speed of the navigators’ reaction to the responses to their letters sent to the port authorities of different countries. Using this criterion the results of the formative experiment and mass training have been determined. They have shown about 30% increase in the skills of foreign language proficiency as to business correspondence in English in EG of cadets compared to these skills in CG of cadets. These results have proven and confirmed the effectiveness of the suggested methodology.
