Abstract

The article examines early American philosophy, namely the philosophical views of the American Enlightener Ethan Allen (1738–1789). In the 18th century, the Enlightenment with the idea of reason as a tool for knowing God and the world replaced puritan philosophy. This era was characterized by deistic moods, and beliefs in God as the prime mover, who stayed away from the created world. The world works according to predetermined laws of nature, which in turn means the possibility of knowing God and his plan through the analysis of creations. The article examines the socio cultural and political processes that contributed to the formation of such ideas in society. The main biographical information about Ethan Allen and the influence of his environment are investigated. It is demonstrated that the educated doctor Thomas Young (1731–1777) was not only contributed to the philosophical development of Ethan Allen, but he also was a likely co-author of the treatise “Reason, the Only Oracle of Man: Or, A Compendious System of Natural Religion” (1784). “Oracle” probably was the first in its kind book in the United States of America. This treatise contains a rational critique of religion, the Bible, and the institution of the church, to return reason and truth to the faith. Today, the United States of America has a great influence on the world with its politics, economy, culture, philosophy, etc. The relevance of the topic lies in the fact that in recent decades there has been an increase in interest in early American culture and a rethinking through the prism of modern values of worldview ideas of the past. The problem is that thinkers who have not received enough attention in the past or have been rejected by society because of their ideas need to be revised, and their views need to be rethought. Ethan Allen’s philosophy of religion shocked the reader of the 18th century with its frankness and dangerous ideas: rethinking the role of God in the existence of the world, proof of the existence of God, the truth of the biblical text, the relevance of prayer, etc. These views testify to the uniqueness of Ethan Allen’s philosophy of religion and its significance for early American philosophy. У статті досліджується рання американська філософія, а саме філософські погляди американського Просвітника Ітана Аллена (Ethan Allen, 1738–1789 рр.). У XVIII ст. на зміну пуританській філософії приходить Просвітництво з ідеєю розуму, як інструменту пізнання Бога і світу. Для цієї епохи були характерні деїстичні настрої, вірування в Бога як першодвигуна, який, створивши світ, усунувся від нього. Світ працює за встановленим наперед законами природи, що так само означає можливість пізнання Бога та його задуму з допомогою розуму шляхом аналізу творінь. У статті досліджено соціокультурні та політичні процеси, які сприяли формуванню подібних ідей у суспільстві. Досліджено основні біографічні відомості про І. Аллена, вплив його оточення, продемонстровано, що освічений лікар Томас Янг (Thomas Young, 1731–1777 рр.), не лише сприяв філософським розвиткам І. Аллена, але й був імовірним співавтором найвідомішого трактату, вірогідно першого подібного в Сполучених Штатах Америки, «Розум – єдиний оракул людини» (“Reason, the Only Oracle of Man: Or, A Compendious System of Natural Religion”, 1784 р.). Цей трактат містить раціональну критику релігії, Біблії та інституту церкви, я метою повернення у віру розуму та істини. На сьогодні Сполучені Штати Америки мають великий вплив на світ своєю політикою, економікою, культурою, філософією тощо. Актуальність теми полягає в тому, що в останні десятиліття відбувається посилення інтересу до ранньої американської культури та переосмислення крізь призму сучасних цінностей світоглядних орієнтирів минулого. Проблема полягає в тому, що мислителі, які в минулому не отримали достатньої уваги, або були неприйняті суспільством через власні ідеї, потребують перегляду, а їхні погляди – переосмисленню. Філософія релігії І. Аллена шокувала читача XVIII ст. своєю відвертістю та небезпечними ідеями: переосмислення ролі Бога в існуванні світу, докази існування Бога, істинність біблійного тексту, актуальність молитви тощо. Ці погляди свідчать про унікальність філософії релігії І. Аллена та його значення для ранньої американської філософії.
