Особливою темою у середньовічній ментальності є тема смерті. Смерть була головною подією у житті кожного християнина, в ній відображався увесь духовний шлях людини. Не буде перебільшенням сказати, що життя людини того часу було суцільною підготовкою до смерті. Особливо це було актуально для часів раннього та пізнього Середньовіччя, коли напружене очікування кінця світу сягнуло свого апогею. Один із Батьків Церкви, талановитий автор та проповідник, папа римський Григорій Великий, приділяв багато уваги цій темі. У своїх «Діалогах» він з дидактичними цілями описує смерть як праведників так і грішників. A special theme in the medieval mentality is the theme of death. It would not be an exaggeration to say that human life at that time was a continuous preparation for death. This was especially true during the early and late Middle Ages, when the intense anticipation of the end of the world reached its apogee.
