Abstract. The urgency of the problem. Ethnic self-awareness is a characteristic subjective feature of an ethnos and a subjective form of manifestation of ethnicity. It is a determining factor in the emergence and resolution of interethnic tensions and ethnic conflicts and is expressed in the forms of public consciousness – in language, norms, values, rituals. An important element in the structure of ethnic consciousness is the system of ethnic stereotypes, which contributes to the study of interethnic relations and ethnic identity. There are often discrepancies between ethnic images and their originals, so focusing only on images can lead to mistakes. Nevertheless, they contribute to the implementation of intercultural contacts, since we perceive a person precisely within the framework of a particular ethnic image. Therefore, entering into interethnic contact, it is necessary to know your ethnic image in the representation of other peoples. The purpose of this article is to examine the ethnic image in ethnic self-awareness. The methodological prerequisites were the modern scientific philosophical paradigm of self-awareness. Scientific novelty. Ethnic self-awareness has a complex structure; it includes cognitive, emotional and behavioral components. Ethnic self-awareness “guides” the behavior of people, therefore interests are the motor of ethnic self-awareness. At the origins of the formation of ethnic culture are common interests and needs for a group of people, forcing them to live and act collectively. These needs express a common collective interest, different from the mechanical sum of the individual interests of a given group, they represent interindividual interests and can be satisfied through joint actions of the team members. Conclusions. In the process of satisfying needs, a collective, specific cultural experience is formed that differs from the experience of other groups. The conditions for meeting collective needs are always different, which leads to the formation of unique cultural complexes.
