Колір як наративний код у романі Маркуса Зузака «Крадійка книжок»: семантика лексем зі значенням кольору

Abstract

У статті здійснено літературознавчий аналіз семантики кольору в романі Маркуса Зузака «Крадійка книжок» як системного наративного коду, що бере участь у структуруванні травматичного досвіду війни, масового насилля та втрати. Дослідницьку увагу акцентовано на виявленні функціонування кольорових лексем у межах наративної свідомості персоніфікованої Смерті та визначення їх ролі у формуванні ідеологічних, екзистенційних й етичних смислів твору. Методологічну основу становлять наративний, семіотичний та контекстуально-інтерпре- таційний підходи, зокрема типологія знаків Ч. Пірса та концепція контекстуальної трансформації кольору М. Алмалеха. У статті обґрунто- вано доцільність розгляду кольору не як декоративного елементу художнього опису, а як автономного семіотичного ресурсу, здатного трансформувати традиційні культурні конотації в умовах тоталітарного дискурсу. Проведено системний аналіз білого, червоного й чорного кольорів, які репрезентують відповідно процеси дереалізації масової смерті, афективний прорив тілесного насильства та збереження індивідуальної пам'яті. The article presents a literary analysis of color semantics in Markus Zusak's novel The Book Thief as a systematic narrative code that participates in structuring the traumatic experience of war, mass violence, and loss. The aim of the study is to identify the functioning of color lexemes within the narrative consciousness of personified Death and to determine their role in forming the ideological, existential, and ethical meanings of the work. The methodological foundation consists of narrative, semiotic, and contextualinterpretive approaches, specifically Charles Sanders Peirce's typology of signs M. Almalech's concept of contextual transformation of color. The article substantiates the appropriateness of considering color not as a decorative element of artistic description but as an autonomous semiotic resource capable of transforming traditional cultural connotations within the context of totalitarian discourse. A systematic analysis of white, red, and black colors is conducted, representing respectively the processes of derealization of mass death, the affective breakthrough of bodily violence, and the preservation of individual memory. It is demonstrated that white functions as a screen of ideological paralysis; red as an indexical sign that makes violence visible; black as a code of writing and ethical resistance. Color imagery functions as a narrative filter through which Death comprehends and verbalizes the unbearable experience of historical catastrophe, combining the aesthetic dimension with the ethics of testimony. The obtained results expand understanding of the novel's poetics and actualize the potential of color as a meaning-making mechanism in contemporary prose.
